So, I already had been xposting to both LJ and DW for a while. I figured, though, that I would run an import and grab the LJ comments. I wasn't sure how that was going to turn out.

It turns out that first off, DW's import thingy is super busy right now (wonder why!) so it took a couple days. And now I seem to have duplicates of every post. I could go through and delete the extras, but in some cases both have comments on them, and besides I have other things to do at the moment. I might go down the list and delete any dupes that are commentless, but certainly not right now.

So, if you're looking at my DW journal and wondering about the duplicate entries, that would be why.

I had a similar issue (I'd been crossposting from DW to LJ) and was able to get it fixed by raising a Support request, and (after a misunderstanding at first), one of the volunteers there was able to run a tool to merge all the duplicates for me automatically.

The FAQ How do I import my journal from another site has the following:

If you do multiple imports of your journal, or if you've previously crossposted entries from your Dreamwidth journal to the journal you're now importing, you shouldn't get duplicate copies of entries. Crossposted and duplicate entries should be detected and won't be imported.

Under certain, very specific instances, you may get duplicate entries. If this happens, please contact Support. Please provide the URLs of 3-5 entries and their duplicates so that Support can identify the problem.

I am SO glad that I moved my account from LJ in January when the announcement that all of the servers were Back in the USSR and I don't have to deal with the emigrant flood right now. It took maybe an hour or so to move a decade worth of posts and comments, and aside from old broken links, all went well for me.

The first thing I did after setting up my DW account was to import everything from LJ. That worked fine. The second time I ran a comments import, which was some months later, it did the same thing -- duplicated all my entries. I filed a support request and they said it was a known bug and they were working on it. I haven't had it happen again since, so I assumed that it was fixed.

That was back in 2009 or thereabouts. I'm still working on deleting old duplicates, as I have time. :-)

I had the same thing happen (when I last imported stuff, back around January). In my case I think it duplicated any entry that had a little line at the bottom saying it was crossposted--because that tagline existed on the LJ posts but not the DW ones, so they weren't, after all, identical! So it didn't overwrite the nearly-identical entry.

My solution was the same as yours--to delete any duplicate without comments, but to keep both copies if there were comments on both. Unless it was some silly meme and no one had said anything but "LOL!" on it, or whatever.

Sheesh. This is like losing Geocities all over again or something.
