Clint Heine Supports Rape Threat Againts Maia of Capitalism Bad, Tree Pretty

New Zealand blogger Clint Heine, who is involved in conservative Kiwi politics, has recently supported a racist rape threat against Maia of Capitolism Bad, Tree Pretty.

On Clint Heine's blog, one commenter wrote that Maia's liberal politics were "Nothing a big black dildo won’t fix..." Clint Heine replied "James…..!!! Nice suggestion, go over there and tell her that :)"

Clint Heine claims that the rape threat was, in fact, nothing more than a suggestion that Maia should masturbate more frequently. Clint Heine's suggestion is, of course, a load of donkey hooey.

First off, as commenter Richard Jeffrey Newman observes, Clint Heine's comment remains misogynist even if his claims are true. "Whether you were talking about rape or not," writes Richard Jeffrey Newman, "your comment was just another version of “all-the-woman-needs-is-a-good-fuck,” which is not something that can even be dignified by saying it is, simply, in poor taste. It is misogynist on its face, and it seems to me that you are the one who owes Maia an apology."

Secondly, as commenter Diatryma points out via metaphor, Clint Heine and his commenter's language is phrased such a way that is obviously threatening, even if they attempt to weasel out of it with a secondary explanation:

"[It's n]othing a baseball bat wouldn’t fix," writes Diatryma. "After all, sports are a viable way to work out aggression and they teach teamwork and fair play, too. Right?"

Most importantly, as Ampersand points out, threats like these are a common weapon used against women bloggers. "[T]here’s nothing unusual about James’ and Heine’s remarks. It’s not uncommon for female bloggers, especially feminist bloggers, to have to deal with such oh-so-hilarious rape threat jokes. The purpose of these “jokes” is to remind uppity women (especially poor women and women of color) of their place. (The pathetic nature of men who feel driven to put uppity women in their place is, I trust, obvious.)"

Check out the Alas thread for more interesting commentary on Clint Heine's rape threat, as well as some spluttering protestations from Clint Heine himself.
