Paidhi Boy is Not Watching Wishbone right now--there'll be a protest if I turn it off, though, and since he's playing with his Hotwheels in front of the TV it's fair, the rule is if you're not in the room it has to be turned off. Anyway. I don't exactly love Wishbone the way I do some other kids shows, but I've never had much against it. Today, though, the book that they're squishing down and vastly oversimplifying is Pride and Prejudice and they have contrived to make Darcy the main character.
Now, I know this is because Wishbone the dog always plays the major role in the book they do, but you know, what about books with girls as MCs, huh? Wishbone can't do, say, a major male character without being the main character? Or, Mithras forbid, pretend to be a girl?
No, of course not! What am I thinking? I must be insane or something.

Last night Paidhi Boy and I went out and painted the town red! Well, we went to Applebees (a place he's been wishing to revisit since Grandma took him there last summer) and crayoned up the kids menu and then ate chicken fingers (I had pasta with shrimp and broccoli, it was pretty good) and then The Ice Cream Store, actually Serendipity, where we deliberated over the ice cream flavors--a task made easier by Paidhi Boy's distaste for what he calls "bumpies." Paidhi Girl isn't around this week, and Mr. Cameron was out working, so it was just the two of us. We came home and watched some Simpsons, and then Paidhi Boy crashed--all part of my nefarious plan!--and then I crashed, too. I guess we were too tired to carry out the plan he'd formulated walking out of the ice cream store. "We could watch the sun set down," he suggested. "On a nice day." On asking for specifics, he explained that we would put chairs on the front lawn and sit there watching the sun set. Good idea! It was, indeed, a very nice day. He was asleep before sunset, though.
But not before he made yet another plea to go see the Simpsons movie right now. He heard from a friend at daycamp that it was "in theaters NOW!" (level of urgency not added by editor). We explained to him that it wasn't fair to Paidhi Girl to go right now, she wants to see it too, but he is deathly afraid that somehow it will only be in theaters for, say, the next day or two and he'll miss it! He won't, we explained that, and he seemed to accept that, but he renewed his petition last night.

Writing has been slow and frustrating, especially since I went and took the trouble to clear all the short fiction projects away so I could focus on the novel and now there's a short fiction project jumping up and down, going "Ann! Ann! I'm shiny, work on meeeeeee!" Damn it!
