This year, I am thankful that we are not going to the brother-in-law's house for Thanksgiving, where we would have heard all about God's Will, listened to a long, rambling, modular grace (made of pre-fab, snap-together Prayer Components(TM)), dealt with the emotional trauma of the Paidhi kids trying to be friends with the obnoxious cousins, bitten my tongue till it bled at the casually racist comments...

Ah. No, we're staying home this year. Mother-in-law is not pleased, but there it is. And for the first time in...hell, more than fifteen years, I'm cooking Thanksgiving turkey. If nothing else, it's a good excuse to put on my Squid Squad apron (I love you, sparkly fabric paint!).

The turkey popping thing has popped. There are mashed potatoes, stuffing (not in the bird! No salmonella at this house, thank you), green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, beaujolais, and pumpkin pie. Yay!

Edited to Add: I forgot to mention my great-aunt Anna's silver, and Mr. Cameron's grandma's Currier and Ives china.

Mmm, that was delicious.

Ah, family meals. Edifying dinner conversation. Projects that result from such conversation.

We had been discussing what we were thankful for. Paidhi Boy was thankful for the world. ("Yes," I agreed, "we'd be in sad shape if there were no world!") And Paidhi Girl said she was thankful the sun hadn't exploded any time in the past year. Then there was speculation that somewhere in the universe aliens were sitting down to dinner wondering if the sun would explode. You know, like you do.

An outline took shape pretty quickly, Paidhi Girl did the artwork ("Mom, what do aliens look like?"), and it was off and uploaded to Scratch.
