So, back when Mr Leckie and I moved in to our house, some fifteen years ago, we said, "One of these days, we'll put a deck in!"

This week, we had a deck put in.* We had California Custom Decks (no, they're not in California) do the job. And they were awesome. The deck is awesome. It's very simple, just a rectangle, but it's fantastic. They clearly took trouble over all sorts of small details that just make the whole thing just so nice. It would have been cheaper if we'd done it ourselves, but it also would have taken much, much longer, and not been quite so spit and polish.

Mr Leckie's mother, bless her, is a woman who always finds something that needs adjusting. Why didn't we choose yellow instead of red for those curtains? Surely we'd want smaller chairs for that room? (She does it to herself, too--when she makes it, the Thanksgiving turkey is always a little drier than she'd like, etc) She came over this afternoon and we showed her our spiffy new deck, and she found nothing to question, no "why didn't you..." at all. Nothing.

We just spent forty-five minutes out on the deck admiring it. We'll probably be spending hours on it tomorrow, admiring it some more.

If you're in the St. Louis area and you're wanting someone to put a deck in, do consider California Custom Decks, they did a fantastic job for us.

*The Saga of The Leckies' 2010 Home Improvements is a multi-volume epic. Suffice it to say, it was yet again one of those times you make one small change that starts a chain-reaction of "Well, having done that, it's now necessary/urgent/logical to do this other thing, which in turn led to this other project, which then..." etc.
