Opium smoking was introduced to the West in the 1850s, a habit brought from China by European travellers and sailors and Chinese immigrants. Veiled by an unrivalled aura of Eastern decadence, it appealed to those with an artistic temperament in Europe and to degenerates in North America.


So....in North America, those with an artistic temperament were degenerates? Or...?

Well, it's got lots of photos, which is why I checked it out of the library.

No, she's saying that there were no people of artistic temperment in America in the 1850's, so only the degenerates smoked opium.
