Writing a short story is the opposite experience of doing NaNoWriMo. I find that using the NaNo technique (write without stopping until you've got your word count, then go back later and clean up the mess) doesn't translate--I can't just sprawl all over the place and then go back and trim it into shape. It's very frustrating.

Well, it got better today, anyway. I started with 3,500 words (of a second draft--I was well on my way to 7 or 8k with the first) and ended up with about 2,500. I feel like I've made progress. I had to stop, though, because I got to a point where I'd have to concentrate long and hard to start on the next scene, and I have to get Paidhi Girl from gymnastics camp at the Y in a half hour--barely enough time to rev up, and none to actually work.

Here, behind a cut, is a picture from the end of May.

Isn't she cute???
