Well, Asimov's didn't want Squeaky.
I'm now back in the saddle with Anganos, and six thousand words into a new draft. They don't all count--the first 3K or so were already written, so it's taken me a week to write three thousand words. All new, since none of this was in the first draft. After a gender change for at least one character and a re-building of a few roles, I've had to start fresh in a number of ways.
This is the frustrating part of x+1 drafts. Some days I can get four thousand words with a simple cut and paste, and then some days I labor for hours to produce a hundred--a hundred that involved tossing a thousand or so into the recycle bin. That first draft I can do a thousand words an hour, or more. I just write and write and pretty soon I've got a huge stack of words. It's an exhilarating feeling--until I actually read the words I wrote. This revising business stinks.
Still, I'm making progress, even if slow, and it's a relief to be back on the novel again.
Now, where should Squeaky go next? I've got several choices, so I suppose I'll just have to flip a coin or something.
