Dear gods.

Well, they say when you do any kind of remodeling you should expect things to be more complicated than...well, than you'd normally expect.

This morning we pulled the sink out, and pulled the base cabinets away from the wall. We discovered the plaster behind the sink was all gone, nothing there but lath and studs (the house was built in the thirties), and there was a weird combination of plaster and wallboard in other places. We also started pulling up the floor. There's a layer of beige vinyl tile that was new when we bought the house. Under that is a layer of plywood, under which is some red and yellow linoleum tile. Under that is some masonite, and under that--the original sheet of linoleum from the thirties.

So Mr. Cameron decided to take down the one scraggly sheet of wallboard that had been behind the cabinets and replace it. He found...

A pantry.

That's right. Whoever installed the cabinets walled up a kitchen pantry. No, there was no body in it. Just the red and yellow tile, and the marks on the walls where shelves used to be. Now, they could have knocked out the other walls of the pantry and made the bathroom a little roomier. (Yes, I had been wondering for years why that part of the bathroom was walled off, when there wasn't anything sticking out from the kitchen to account for it. Now I know.)

So the wall cabinets had to come down. Mr. Cameron has declared that the pantry is going to be bathroom space, and he's knocking the plaster off the entire wall (in the kitchen, where the cabinets were), to replace it with wallboard. We're praying no plaster comes off the cieling. We've already bought the base cabinets, and we might have planned for the pantry if we'd known about it, but we didn't, and...gods, the kitchen is a scary place right now. There are plaster chunks all over the place, and Paidhi Girl is banging the big ones with a hammer to break them up (she demanded to be given work, and this was what Mr. Cameron finally came up with), and Paidhi Boy is putting them (by very tiny handfuls) into the trash.

I am so tired I can't even begin to tell you.

Who in their right mind walls up a pantry so they can install ugly metal cabinets? My mother-in-law and I agree it had to be someone who has never spent much time actually working in a kitchen.
