Oh, and...

I just wanted to add, to the last post. You get leftover yeast slurry when you only make a couple bottles of soda. So we made a loaf of bread with the rest. Nothing fancy, just added flour and milk and some sugar and a tiny bit of salt. It didn't rise especially well, I'm not sure if that was because it was cool yesterday or because champagne yeast isn't the ideal bread yeast, or both. Next time I might start earlier and let it rise longer. Or maybe we'll just get some balloons and do yeast experiments. Whichever seems most fun, I suppose.

Also. The whole soda-making thing only became more fun when, explaining how the soda-making process worked, I reminded Paidhi Girl of something I'd told her a while ago--when yeast eats sugar, it pees alcohol and farts carbon dioxide. This was a source of endless amusement. When we first bottled the soda, there was no sign of activity for quite some time, and Paidhi Girl was feeling discouraged and sure that the yeast weren't doing anything. Because it had foamed up right away in the measuring cup, when we were making the stuff. So when, just before bed, I pointed out the tiny bubbles at the top of her bottle of soda, I said, "Do you know what that is?"

"Yeah!" she answered. "Farts!" And she went to bed happy.
