mmm...hummus.
Jul. 31st, 2006 12:34 pmTwo cloves of garlic are not quite enough garlic. Three are a bit too much.
I'd rather have my hummus with a bit too much. Nobody else in the house will eat it, whether I put two or three in. Or come near me, for that matter. But the kids are at daycamp for the day (with half-frozen water bottles, and the counselors warn they'll be wet when they're picked up, because on hot days they do lots of wet kinds of games), there's nobody in the house but me. I've been to the county clinic and gotten a hepatitis A vaccine--at some point after Paidhi Girl was born, MO passed a law requiring food service workers to have hep A vaccinations. Which makes complete sense to me. I also needed slip-resistant shoes, which I now have. They'll provide uniform shirts and pants, and at the end of this week I'll know which schools in the district need cafeteria workers for what hours. Guaranteed to be while the Paidhi Kids are in school. Then it's a question of organizing writing times around that.
I also need a haircut. But they're always insanely busy during lunch, so I'm home eating hummus and corn chips and reading my friends list, and then I'll be off on the rest of my errands.
Today is also the deadline for Surreal Botany--send one in,
ultradark!. I sent one some weeks ago. At the time, I knew nothing about botany, field guides, or even the latin naming system. Fortunately, the library is a veritable treasure house of books on every topic, and after examining a few field guides, the wikipedia entry on binomial naming, and a few other resources, I worked my plant up, plugged the appropriate parts into the form, and hit "submit."
I liked what I'd come up with, but I wasn't convinced it would be sufficiently surreal. And I've been expecting a rejection. Imagine my surprise to hear that pretty much anyone who had subbed before, say, a week or so ago had either been rejected or was under consideration. Cool! Even if it ultimately gets rejected, I'll know that it was under consideration, which is nice. And I learned a bit about plants, and botany, and learning stuff is always good. Always learn stuff when you can, about anything that presents itself, that's what I say.
Anyway. When it comes back rejected, I'll post it on the LJ, since it really doesn't have anywhere else to go.
You know, it's hard to type and eat hummus and corn chips at the same time.

Date: 2006-08-01 02:25 pm (UTC)The two plants I told you about just weren't awe-inspiring enough for me. Final submission: Cloud Anemone . . .
Best of luck with your fish-eating plants!
