So I decided I needed to do some more research for the story, and I went to the library. On my way in, I was accosted by a gentleman who said he was with Channel 2 News, and did I vote in the November elections? Oh, brother, did I.

And had I voted to increase the state minimum wage? Also affirmative.

"Did you realize," he said, in dire tones, "that you also voted for a fifteen percent pay increase for firefighters all across Missouri? It was in the fine print!"

"Oh, good!" I said, quite cheerily. "I think firefighters deserve a..."

I didn't get to finish. He actually recoiled in startlement. "But it'll cost fire departments millions of dollars!"

I looked down at his jacket, and saw over the "Channel 2" embroidered there the thing that I had forgotten about Channel 2: FOX. "I don't think I'm interested in talking to you," I said, and turned my back on him and walked into the library.

Really and truly, how low do you have to be to begrudge firefighters a decent salary?

(And who votes without even reading the paragraph on the ballot that explains what the initiative you're voting on does? Sheesh.)

We used to live in a house owned by members of the Republican National Committee. Arnold Schwarzenegger left a recorded message on our answering machine explaining how Nurses! Firefighters! and Teachers! were STEALING MONEY! from ordinary people!

I called his office and said he should be ashamed of himself.
