Not much other news. Well, except. I now own a rock tumbler. Yes, envy me!
Okay, maybe not. But a rock tumbler is one of those things I've wished for since I was pretty young, and my mom got me one when she was ordering presents for the kids this December, and gave it to me yesterday. (From Steve Spangler Science, whose catalogues are a source of infinite entertainment for the kids.) I almost squeaked.
I got it yesterday, but wasn't up to assembling anything and couldn't find any vaseline, which the instructions said was needed. So this afternoon I got the vaseline, and with my able assistants I assembled it, put the included rocks in it, and then we all trooped down to the basement to plug it in. (It's noisy, and has to run for days and days.) So it's grinding away, though it seems to be leaking a bit and I'll have to check it tonight, but it's supposed to go something like four days before we move on to a slightly finer grit. And that phase lasts for two to four weeks. Not exactly instant gratification. Still. It's totally, utterly cool.
(Yeah, I know I could have bought one for myself ages ago, but it's one of those "well, do I really need this, and would I rather have the rock tumbler or that couple of books...?" things.)
