In conversation with Mr. Cameron, I discovered that 1) the vents in the attic were open, and 2) the trapdoor to the attic had been open all night.

Ah!

So then I was up last night fiddling more with "The Snake's Wife" and finally couldn't take anymore and decided to go to bed. The front porch is screened in, and so we let the cats out so they can look at the birds and such, and usually before we close the door at night we rattle a bag of treats and they come running. (We've closed the door without making absolutely sure we knew where both cats were, and had an unhappy cat the next morning, so...). This time only Puddin came, and I was worried, because Klaus never passes up a treat. So I went looking for her on the porch and....a bat flew over my head.

Yes, the bat, who had been chased out to the porch and then the screen door propped open, was still there. So I took the cat in, even though she really wanted that bat, and opened the screen door all the way, as far as it would go, and then went in and hoped the stupid thing would find the door this time.

best batty wishes

our cat (growing up) never brought a bat into the house, or chased one around it, but she was always bringing us still-live presents from her recent hunts. many mice and scarab beetles, and one huge black butterfly easily as big as a bat (and just as freaky, because since when do butterflies get so big?), and then of course the occassional lizard and kangaroo rat.

now that I live out in CA with a family of my own, we have our dog Zev who also hunts in the backyard and brings me things. the other day it was a very large rodent that I thought at first was an opossum.

it's great to know they care ;)
