I had totally forgotten how, when I was eleven, I wanted to be a marine biologist. Oddly, Paidhi Girl wants to be a marine biologist, and she is eleven. Her fish craze was started by Insaniquarium (bizzarely, she seems to have gotten a whole world and several plots out of a silly flash game and I think she's working on some Warriors/Insaniquarium crossover fic. I am not making that up).

Anyway. When I was eleven...well, a lot of things happened when I was eleven, but I had totally forgotten, until io9 brought it up, that Man From Atlantis aired when I was eleven.

My desire to study the ocean was triggered by hot, half-naked Patrick Duffy. Hoo, boy. Yes.

Sol Invictus, I loved that show when it was on. Why has it never been released on DVD? If there's any sort of merciful deity attentive to the desires of mortals, someone will release Man From Atlantis on DVD!

Fortunately, the entire pilot is available on Youtube, in ten 10-minute chunks. I recommend it! I also wish there was more--the only other episode they have is one that even when I was eleven I knew was utterly stupid, so you know it's pretty bad. I might watch it anyway, though--the pilot held up much better than I thought it would, and I remembered more of it than I expected, for having only seen it once (no VCR in 1977!).

Not much other news. It's cold here. I keep pulling snails out of the fishtank. Which I just cleaned--my fingers are all wrinkled from the water. Boring week, really. Best kind, I say.

Oddly enough, I also wanted to be a marine biologist, though I think it was more around the time I was 7-8 rather than 11. By the time I was 11 I'd already decided that becoming any sort of -ologist required altogether too much math, and I would settle for writing about them instead.

Your daughter sounds like a lot of fun! How long did your interst in marine biology last?

I've never heard of Man from Atlantis, but I have heard of hot Patrick Duffy. I'll have to check out the pilot.

The marine biology thing only lasted into early highschool. It left very few traces, sadly.

I had a crush on a hemophiliac in eighth grade, so back then I wanted to be a geneticist. I figured I could cure him and then we could get married.

Well, at least your goal was within the realm of the (vaguely) possible, so that was good.

Me, no matter how expert I became at marine biology, I was never going to find a hot, half naked, water-breathing man washed up on the beach.
