Also kind of old news, and adding to the persistent sense of unreality I’ve been experiencing lately–the Clarke Award shortlist. Ancillary Justice is on it. And look, it’s my Golden Tentacle buddy Ramez Naam on there, too! And Kameron Hurley, with previous Golden Tentacle winner God’s War! (Which was only this year released in the UK, which is what counts for the Clarkes.) It’s like a Golden Tentacle Reunion! And there other fabulous, non-tentacled books! In fact, below this paragraph please find convenient links through which you can purchase any of the books on this year’s shortlist:

God’s War by Kameron Hurley

UK Book UK Kindle US Book US Kindle

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie

The Disestablishment of Paradise by Phillip Mann

UK Book UK Kindle US Book US Kindle

Nexus by Ramez Naam

UK Book UK Kindle US Book US Kindle

The Adjacent by Christopher Priest

UK Book UK Kindle US Book US Kindle

The Machine by James Smythe

UK Book UK Kindle US Book US Kindle

The Guardian ran a story on the shortlist in which Ramez, Kameron, and myself were referred to as “international debutantes” which sounds funny, but I guess “debutante” doesn’t have quite the same connotations over there, huh. Still, I was amused.

Oh, excellent news. :) Fingers crossed, as always.

Debutante as in emerging into society, I presume, referring to the SF book scene. That's how I'd translate it based on Jane Austen-esque and 20th century usage. Secondarily it might mean coming of age, but I'd see it as joining adult society rather than in the purely debut sense.

Yes, it does mean those things--but it's interestingly gendered, and in the US at least it carries a sort of "rich and spoiled" freight. In reality, quite a few coming-out/coming of age traditions of various communities in the US do the dressing up and dancing and being presented, but don't involve being rich or spoiled or what have you, but the word carries those ideas with it pretty strongly.

So, I assume the writer meant "emerging onto the SF book scene" but didn't have that strong "rich spoiled young woman of a particular sort" thing behind it in their mind.

Oh, and thank you! I assume I won't win, and that doesn't bother me much. As I'm concerned, just making that list is winning. :D

Thank you! And I know, right????? It's its own kind of "win" and more than enough of one, as far as I'm concerned. :D
