Woah! Long, mentally exhausting week.

We took Paidhi Girl to camp, where she'll stay for two weeks. She was very excited. Paidhi Boy and I have already written her a letter. (Paidhi Boy's: i LovE yoU LovE PAiDHi BOy) but not yet received one, though my mom got one the other day, along with an origami skunk.

Fourth of July parade--yay for cub scout troops and local political candidates and the local high school marching band! Then a nap, because it gets dark late in the summer, and we wait all year for the fireworks! When we got up it was raining. Rained all night. There were still fireworks, though, and Paidhi Boy and I got wet watching them. Went home, ate chocolate ice cream, and went to bed.

Next day, I learned that a local farm (a largeish one, that does a big u-pick business) had opened their periodic store here--peaches! I bought two pecks.

It took me two straight days to peel, slice, and cook/can those bad boys. But I now have a dozen jars of peach butter (not quite as thick as it should be, I lost paitence after a few hours of cooking), a dozen or so jars of peach jam, and a pie. Oh, and six jars of freezer jam, because I still had peaches but I was sick unto death of cooking. That wore me out, let me tell you.

There was a brief kitty scare on Monday--after spending all afternoon under the bed, at suppertime Klaus crept slowly out, sniffed supper, and turned around and wandered back under. This is Klaus, who will eat anything. Marshmallows, powdered sugar, bread...and she never misses supper! And the vet might not be open on Tuesday...so I called, and they said maybe it was the heat. We've been air conditioned the past week or so, though, since it actually got too hot without it. Keep an eye on her, they did have office hours on Tuesday. By Tuesday she seemed better, though not quite herself, but by Wednesday she was back to her old tricks. Don't know what it was, but I wasn't looking forward to losing another cat. Or explaining it to Paidhi Girl when she got back. We're all glad she's feeling better.

In rejection news, the spacefaring dinos have returned, with a nice note, from Strange Horizons. Off to the next stop on the list they go.

Oh, also, in honor of Demeter I bought and consumed a pluot. I did not re-enact the ancient and profound myth that inspired the purchase, though.

I'll leave you with that thought--I've got to wrap a birthday present and be ready to socialize with the other kindergarten parents (Paidhi Boy has a birthday party to go to--very exciting! He's ready to go now! But he's got an hour or so to wait). Which takes psychic preparation, for me, as avoidant as I am. And I'm still feeling worn out and not quite mentally on--I'm not sure what about this week has done that.
