The excitement for the day
Aug. 26th, 2006 06:43 pmSo we've got this Metrolink thing, right? Only it's been just one line--from the airport, through downtown, and across the river--forever. Finally, there's another line! And it opened today! And riding on it today and tomorrow is free!
And Paidhi Boy loves trains.
So we went down to the new end of the new line, and got free stuff--a water bottle that says "Go Metrolink" and one of those nylon cooler/lunchbox thingies, and a foam rubber bus, and some shiny beads. In line for the free stuff, I got leafleted by our County Councilman, whose literature tells us that "The Republican majority (on the County Council) serves as an effective chack on the lapses of the entrenched bureaucracy." Uh huh. If I'd seen that while he was still in front of me, I'd have asked him to say that with a straight face.
Anyway. We rode up to the edge of the free zone and then rode back. Then we were thirsty. There were booths and things set up, mostly companies giving out brochures, but a few drink/ice cream stand things, and the price they wanted for water...well, we walked half a block to a gas station and got bottled water there. Drank some, zipped the rest into the spiffy new cooler thingie, and rode again.
It was pretty crowded. And hot. But the nice thing is, the route goes by a couple of places that we go to (the store with the sparkly pens and the good selection of origami paper, Trader Joe's...). And the next time I have to drive to Clayton to do any business (the county government is there, so jury duty and the kinds of things that you don't do often but every now and then you have to go to downtown Clayton for) I won't worry about where to park--I'll take the train! I am pleased.
